As stated elsewhere, we are independent of any particular brand of product or source of supply. Nonetheless we often promote certain things as 'best-of-breed'. Effectively this means that where we have tried something and been delighted with the results, we will stay with it until something shows us that there is an alternative on the market which is better or less expensive.

Most hardware, frankly, is much of a muchness. In general terms it comes pouring out of a small number of huge plants in China and the Far East in general, and frequently only gets badged when someone sticks a label on the outside of the case.Yes, we do have favourites, but this is more often that we like their ordering methods and reliability on delivery - or that they will negotiate on price which allows us to make a small margin.

In the software arena this is not always the case. Often there ar huge gaps between what a producer says a package will do, and what it's actually capable of doing - sometimes bordering on the fraudulent, occasionally crossing that border with impunity.

What follows is a brief list of products we ourselves have had good experiences with. together with a brief description of what they do.

RegCure

There are a lot of 'Registry cleaners' on the market, but we have used one which consistently outperforms the rest - and a recent survey backed up our findings. Produced by ParetoLogic in the USA, RegCure and various other products from the same stable, such as XoftSpy [anti-spyware] are inexpensive for an annual subsbription and do help to keep your PC healthy and running properly.

Snag-It

Snagit is a screen capture tool. Capture anything on your screen, edit the image and print it or share it as you wish. It can capture the content of a video or audio file, and there is a scroll feature to allow you to capture content from more than 1 page.

MozyPro

MozyPro is an online backup service of the 'set-it and forget-it' variety. It works in the background all the time you are connected to the internet, uploading and checking the folders and files you have earmarked for back-up. The tag-line is 'business features, consumer prices', and this is certainly true, especially if you want to back up servers with MS Exchange and SQL databases [at no extra cost]

For business use MozyPro represents excellent value for money, especially for Windows 2003 Business Server users with Exchange and SQL databases to back-up. The standard monthly rate per server is $7.95, with a charge of £1.75 for every 10Gb increment of data stored.
